Despite Progress, Roadblocks Remain for a Just Climate Deal
Paris, France. The first week of the COP21 UN climate talks wrap up in Paris today with a new climate deal closer than ever before, but ambition is not up to par, says humanitarian aid organisation CARE International. Unless ministers step up pace during the second week of the talks, the world’s poorest people are locked into a cycle of worsening climate change impacts.
Sven Harmeling, CARE International’s Climate Change Advocacy Coordinator states:
“The climate vulnerable countries showed real leadership this week, setting ambitious target to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. But watering down of the climate deal remains a real threat, as there has been hardly any progress in unblocking countries’ positions on mitigation and climate finance.”
“It’s encouraging to see loss and damage anchored into the new draft given to ministers today. This is an important step forward in addressing the permanent loss of livelihoods many vulnerable communities are already facing on the frontlines of climate change impacts,” Harmeling adds.
“We are still a long way from a just climate deal. Human rights and gender equality must be part of the deal to ensure we have a meaningful agreement. Paris negotiations are not just about the environment; they are about the survival of humanity, ” Harmeling underlines.
