Good Practices for Integrating Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Climate-Smart Agriculture Programs
FAO and CARE have jointly developed this paper to help policymakers and practitioners meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ambitious goals of Agenda 2030. The paper is intended to help development organisations, public institutions and local organisations develop climate-smart agriculture (CSA) investments, projects and policies that are more gender-responsive.
The paper provides guidance, tools and examples of the successful integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) in climate-smart agriculture work. It demonstrates the necessity and benefits of incorporating a GEWE approach; describes strategies for enhancing the engagement of women and particularly vulnerable groups; and provides practical examples and tools on gender equality and women’s empowerment in agriculture.
CARE recognized early that CSA tends to lack specific commitments to gender equality outcomes and CARE has been working with FAO and other partners to address this gap. Women and men have different knowledge and perceptions of agricultural sustainability, different vulnerabilities to climate change impacts within agriculture and different capacities and assets to respond to threats and opportunities. It is critical that the CSA – and any agriculture or climate change programming – recognizes and responds to these differences.
