CARE established an office in Burundi in 1994 to distribute emergency supplies to internally displaced people and returning refugees. In the years that followed, we managed refugee camps in Burundi and over the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We support people, particularly women, to take a more active role in moving Burundi towards peace and economic security. Our long-term programmes aim to effect lasting social change by focusing on empowering women, children and young people. Our governance and disaster risk reduction work aims to ensure that poor people and communities can plan for and overcome future challenges.
