People with strengthened climate resilience and reduced vulnerabilities
In 2024
Austria’s climate can be divided into three zones: Eastern, Central Alpine, and Transitional Central European. The country is particularly affected by climate change due to its location within the Alpine region. The temperature in Austria has risen by about 2°C since 1880, and is thus considerably above the global temperature increase of about 0.9°C. The effects are already evident, among other things in longer vegetation periods, the increase in temperature extremes, and the melting of glaciers (The Austrian Strategy for Climate Adaptation, Federal Ministry Republic of Austria sustainability and Tourism 2017). Due to increasing temperatures and different patterns in rain and snowfall, 89 out of the 93 alpine glaciers in Austria are retreating, losing about 50% of their ice (Greenpeace). The melting of these glaciers has been noted by many to be one of the most notable indications of human-caused climate impacts.
While Austria is taking steps to mitigate its carbon footprint and adapt to climate change, the country is still vulnerable to the global impacts of this crisis.
